Time’’s up on the challenge I accepted from Lorelle to post comments on blogs that I”ve not previously commented on. Here are the 10 posts I commented on over the past week (it was actually a week and a day, but I don”t think anyone’’s counting):
- How to save time with RSS at cybersoc.com
- Getting on the 43 bus blog at the recently-launched BBC Manchester blog
- Blogging Challenge: Comment on 10 Blogs at Lorelle on Wordpress
- Eight Things I’m Supposed to Love But Don’t at The Bivings Report
- Write to your MP at the new Innocent Drinks blog
- Browse Web 2.0 News by Logo at Micro Persuasion
- Rojo: the verdict at the Telegraph Technology Blog
- 10 things businesses should know before building a website at 456 Berea St
- But will Wallace & Gromit read it? at A PR Guru’’s Musings
- Top of the heap, bottom of the class? at Charles on…anything that comes along
It was certainly the prompt I needed to start commenting on blogs I’ve been reading for a while. When I came across a post which was particularly interesting to me or resonated with me in some way, I took time to think about whether I wanted to add something to the conversation. Sometimes I clipped the post in Bloglines to come back to when I would have more time to think about what I wanted to say - there’s no ”undo” function when posting a comment!
On that point, I definitely prefer comment forms which allow you to preview your comment before submitting it - my blog doesn’t have this function at present so I”ll be looking into this. I’m also going to start using co.mments to track comments on posts I”m interested in or have left my own comment on.

Now that the experiment is over do you think you’ll keep up the commenting? I kept stumbling across your comments wherever I went this past week - I was sort of getting used to that!
Errr, I’ve got other stuff to do too, honest! Really. Honest…
Leaving comments gives no impression of time wasting. It gives the impression of interest, enthusiasm, and passion. It is part of communication, and desperately critical for attracting new potential readers who follow your witty comment back to your blog, find value, and stick around, and are possibly encouraged by your own courage to comment and comment on your blog.
The interesting characteristic I’ve found from several people on the issue of commenting is how much time they spend thinking about it and self-editing their comments before posting the comment. Why do you think that is?
As for the new comment preview, placement is everything and having it sit below isn’t a good idea as it isn’t seen until after someone hits the submit button, IF they scroll down that far to check out their own comment and go past the comment box. I explain more on Comment Live Preview Placement, if you are interested. The only reason I saw the new comment preview is because my cat bumped my mouse while writing this comment. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have seen it at all.
Interesting perspective (and much better on the comment preview
) on how people spend so much time commenting. I think it’s very important for those who want to leave the best impression are are just starting out commenting. After a while, it does become faster and easier.
I’m glad I helped you get started commenting. It is such an important aspect of blogging. Think about how exciting it is when someone leaves a comment on your blog - so give back some of the pleasure.
Thanks for taking on this challenge and I look forward to hearing about how you do on the other challenges.
